Letícia Tomazella has played a wide variety of characters throughout her television career. Her work is well-known both to fans of SBT ‘s children’s and teen soap operas, after her successful portrayal of Arlete in As Aventuras de Poliana (2018-2020), and to those who appreciate Record ‘s biblical stories – such as A Terra Prometida (2016) and Gênesis (2021).
A graduate of the School of Dramatic Arts at USP (University of São Paulo), with a Master’s degree in Brazilian Theater from Unesp (São Paulo State University), Letícia Tomazella has more than 20 plays in her repertoire – including *The Taming of the Shrew * by William Shakespeare, directed by Isser Korik, in which she played the protagonist Catarina. In streaming, besides playing Detective Vendramin in * DNA do Crime*, the artist appeared in *O Negócio* and can be seen in *Tremembé *, here on the other side of the story: her role is that of a criminal.
In the new series, to be released in October on Prime Video, Letícia Tomazella joins colleagues such as Marina Ruy Barbosa, Felipe Simas, Anselmo Vasconcelos, and Bianca Comparato to talk about the daily lives of very famous prisoners in a penitentiary located in the interior of São Paulo state. For over 10 years, besides other products like cartoons and series, SBT dedicated a programming slot to soap operas primarily aimed at children and young adults, although they also attracted a segment of the adult audience receptive to lighter stories, such as As Aventuras de Poliana, in which you were part of the cast, playing Arlete. Now, at the end of A Caverna Encantada and after the production work on a series, the department is being closed by the network. How do you see this closure of a space for original stories for children and young people, already consolidated and which proved valid from a market perspective?
LETÍCIA TOMAZELLA – Whenever a theater closes, or a creative hub closes, or a TV department with an artistic focus closes, I get sad. SBT was a really great place that housed our cast for over two years, in addition to the casts from other productions on the channel. It was one of the few networks that considered the children’s and youth audience. And it’s a free-to-air channel, meaning it had strong reach among the Brazilian population and was a good option for those who can’t afford cable TV. So I regret that we lost the network’s drama department.
In your television career, there’s another successful vein that began about 10 years ago: biblical drama. Although stories like “The Promised Land” and “Jesus” contain elements of melodrama, just like any other soap opera, what do you think can be done to reduce prejudice against stories with these characteristics?
Shorter dramatic productions, but with the feel of soap operas, such as Pedaço de Mim (Netflix) and Beleza Fatal (HBO Max), have won over a segment of the audience that appreciates the genre but desires a commitment that lasts less than traditional soap operas. DNA do Crime (Netflix) shows you in the role of a police officer, a law enforcement agent. And soon we will be able to follow Tremembé, set in the prison known to those who follow police dramas. In what ways do works like these enrich your acting career, besides the setting and the typical conflicts between police officers and inmates/convicts?
I’m loving your questions, because a question like this makes us delve into important reflections about the artistic process. Those who have never acted, and only watch us on TV, can’t imagine how arduous the work of an actress or actor is. It’s immense dedication, and also very intense psychological work… Therefore, it’s a profession that demands a lot from us. So, playing such distinct characters is a great opportunity for study and expanding our artistic and human repertoire. Different characters bring different perspectives to our lives. That’s very enriching.
FC – How do you view the government’s performance regarding Culture today? Unfortunately, this is a sector that tends to be undervalued, whether the government is right-wing or left-wing.
LT – I have witnessed Herculean efforts to recover what was devastated years ago under the previous government. However, in fact, culture continues to face many difficulties, and I sense a slowdown in the progress of topics that are very important to our field. The struggle continues.
FC – Your experience as a stepmother generated many reflections and a book, created from an interesting perspective – that a woman who lives with her partner’s children is automatically a “witch” and cannot make mistakes in her daily life, in contrast to the established position of “new father” that the man obtains in the same situation. Have you considered, or are you considering, the possibility of using your experience in something audiovisual that values and helps to redefine the role of stepmothers?
LT – Absolutely. I have a project about that, which I hope to be able to make viable. It’s worth adding that the book stemmed not only from my experiences, but from dozens of interviews I conducted with stepmothers. It was a relatively extensive research project. Even today, I feel that in drama, the stepmother still doesn’t receive the same recognition as a stepfather. These narratives need to change, since families today are no longer the immutable nuclear families of decades past.
FC – A question every actress gets at some point: what character would you like to have the opportunity to play today? LT – I have many desires. But I would love to be able to delve deeper into a criminal character, for example. This depth of darker characters interests me a lot, because the human psyche and its many paths is something I love to investigate.

How was it to transform personal experiences into works like the short film “Uma Atriz Irrelevante” and the web series “Letícia Tarja Preta”?
“Both were made during the pandemic, a time when many things were pulsating inside us, but suffocated by isolation. I’ve always felt the need to transform pains, joys, and sorrows into stories and works. The short film ‘An Irrelevant Actress’ is very special to me, and it was my first screenplay. I have a degree in Literature, a master’s degree in Brazilian theater, I’ve always loved writing. And now I’m studying screenwriting.”
Soon, you’ll also be starring in the Prime Video series Tremembé. What can audiences expect from this new production, and what was the biggest challenge in bringing your character to life in this new project? “I can’t say too much yet, but she’s definitely a character almost the opposite of Vendramin, and we filmed DNA right after, so it was quite a challenge! It was wonderful, as an actress, to have the opportunity to explore this plurality. And it’s challenging to enter this world of True Crime… I studied a lot, I dove in headfirst!”
