Early Life And Education

Damla Sönmez grew up as an only child, with her maternal family hailing from Abkhazian immigrants. On her father’s side, her grandparent has Circassian roots and made their way to Diyarbakır from Syria. Her dad is an engineer and programmer, while her mom is an architect. From a young age, Damla was captivated by theater and cinema, diving into theater studios early on. Throughout her school years, she was always on stage and even started appearing in TV commercials, with many already predicting a bright future for her.

After finishing her studies at Saint Joseph French High School in Istanbul, she got accepted into the Theatre department at Université de La Sorbonne Nouvelle in Paris. She spent a year there before receiving a scholarship to continue her education at Yeditepe University’s Fine Arts Theatre Department back in Istanbul. Additionally, she dedicated two years to studying the violin and one year to piano at the Mimar Sinan University State Conservatory. Later on, she participated in Jillian O’Dowd’s Contemporary Acting Workshop at the London Dramatic School of Art and honed her skills with Stuart Burney at the Black Nexxus Academy in New York.

In 2009, she took the spotlight in “Bornova Bornova,” earning the title of “Best Supporting Actress” at the 46th Golden Orange Film Festival. She also snagged several other accolades at the Sadri Alışık Awards and the Flying Broom International Women’s Film Festival. Fast forward to 2015, she became the Young President of the festival during the 18th Broom Broom Women Films Festival. Her talent shone through again when she won the 21st Golden Boll Film Festival and the Best Actress Award at the Milano International Film Festival (MIFF) for her performance in “Sea Level (Deniz Seviyesi).” She also starred in “Sibel,” a film that explores Turkish bird language, which made its rounds at various international festivals, earning her the “Sadri Alışık Best Actress Award.” Alongside Ali Atay, she featured in the surreal art house film “Sen Aydınlatırsın Geceyi,” which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, and in the period drama “Ayla,” which was selected as Turkey’s entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 90th Academy Awards.

Television Career

When it comes to her television career, she has played supporting roles in popular series like “Emret Komutanım,” “Gece Gündüz,” and “Türkan.” A significant moment in her TV journey was when she portrayed a bride grappling with memory loss in the series “Şubat.” Her first leading role came in “Bir Aşk Hikayesi,” an adaptation of “I’m Sorry, I Love You,” where she played Ceylan opposite actor Seçkin Özdemir. In 2014, she starred in the TV series “Güllerin Savaşı” as Gülru, sharing the screen with Canan Ergüder. By 2019, she joined the third season of “Çukur,” playing Efsun Kent, a character that captured a lot of media attention. During her time in “Çukur,” Sönmez showcased her vocal talents by singing classic Turkish arabesque songs like “Durdurun Dünyayı,” “Su Ver Leyla,” “Sen Affetsen Ben Affetmem,” “Sorma,” and “Son Mektup.” In 2021, it was announced that she would star in the TV series “Aziz” as Dilruba, alongside actor Murat Yıldırım.
